Velvet Goldmine follows a journalist named Arthur Stuart as he tries to discover what became of the fictional glam rock icon Brian Slade. Stuart interviews Slade's first manager and ex-wife to learn their sides of the story, while recalling his own memories of the '70s rock scene. Stuart had been a huge fan of Slade, and was therefore present during many of the incidents being described by his interview subjects, though he never alerts them to this fact. Only one person, Kurt Wilde, the raw punk to Slade's refined art-rock god, shows any sign of recognizing Stuart, and his story is the most interesting of all.
