Summer of Sam takes place in New York City in 1977. It is the hottest summer New Yorkers can remember with temperatures soaring into the 100's. A serial killer dubbed by the police as Son of Sam is terrorizing the city. In an Italian-American neighborhood in the Bronx, a group of tight knit friends are going to be torn apart by suspicion. The film focuses on a pair of young couples. Vinny (John Leguizamo), a hairdresser and his wife Dioanna (Mira Sorvino) a hard working waitress and Ritchie and his girlfriend Ruby played by Adrian Brody and Jennifer Esposito. Ritchie is leading a secret life at a gay theater club. Vinny is cheating on his wife. A young couple who walked in on Vinnie and his lover are murdered and shortly afterward Vinnie is sure that Son of Sam will come for him too. The local mob boss Luigi (Ben Gazara) takes it upon himself to find out who Son of Sam is. One of Vinny's friends Joey draws up a list of suspects made up largely of people that he has a problem with and contempt for. As temperatures rise tempers flare, blackouts are plaguing the city adding more tension in the neighborhood. Everyone is looking at the other, wondering if they are in the presence of the serial killer. Joey is slowly inciting neighbors to turn against neighbors. As the tension wears on Joey convinces his friends that Ritchie is Son of Sam. Mob mentality ensues. They converge on Ritchie and brutally beat him. His good friend Vinny does nothing to help his friend and just watches. Ritchie's stepfather steps in to save him. He informs them that Son of Sam, David Berkowitz has been taken into custody in Yonkers. Trust and friendships are irrevocably broken. People's lives are torn apart. Will this neighborhood ever recover? This film was produced and directed by Spike Lee who is known for powerful films that make powerful statements about human nature.
