60 Minutes Season 39 Episode 12 Welcome to Hazleton, Shooting Tigers, Broadway Joe

  • November 19, 2006

In the 12th episode of the 39th season of 60 Minutes, the show covers three different stories from around the United States.

The first segment, titled "Welcome to Hazleton," focuses on a small town in Pennsylvania that has become embroiled in a bitter battle over immigration. In 2006, Hazleton passed some of the toughest anti-immigration laws in the country, sparking a heated debate that continues to this day. Correspondent Bill Whitaker travels to Hazleton to speak to both supporters and opponents of the laws and to see how they're affecting the town and its residents.

The second segment, "Shooting Tigers," takes viewers to Thailand, where Buddhist monks have taken it upon themselves to protect endangered tigers from poachers. Although the monks are not supposed to interfere with the natural world, they have found common cause with conservationists in trying to save one of the world's most majestic creatures. Correspondent Lara Logan visits a temple in Thailand to see how this unlikely partnership is working to save the tigers.

The final segment, "Broadway Joe," is a profile of former NFL quarterback Joe Namath. One of the most colorful and controversial players of his time, Namath led the New York Jets to victory in Super Bowl III and became an instant icon. Correspondent Anderson Cooper speaks to Namath about his life on and off the field, from his legendary partying to his long struggle with alcoholism.

All three segments offer a fascinating glimpse into some of the most pressing issues of our time, from immigration and wildlife conservation to the intersection of sports and celebrity culture. 60 Minutes continues to showcase some of the most insightful and compelling journalism on TV, and this episode is no exception.
