Amsterdam is a historical mystery film set in the 1930s that follows three friends who witness a murder and become suspects themselves. Directed by David O. Russell, the film has an ensemble cast led by Christian Bale, Margot Robbie, and John David Washington. The story begins in 1933 as Bale, Robbie, and Washington serve together during World War I and form a deep bond. After the war, they remain close friends as they go their separate ways. Bale becomes a doctor, Robbie an artist, and Washington a lawyer. They reunite in Amsterdam in the 1930s and unexpectedly become entangled in a mystery surrounding the death of a prominent U.S. general.

As the three friends dig deeper into the mystery, they discover a conspiracy that leads back to events during the Great War and involves influential figures seeking power in 1930s America. With their own lives now at risk, the bonds of friendship between the trio are tested as the web of lies and deceit continues to grow.

Russell assembled a star-studded supporting cast for Amsterdam including Robert De Niro, Rami Malek, Anya Taylor-Joy, Chris Rock, Michael Shannon, Mike Myers, Timothy Olyphant, Andrea Riseborough, and Taylor Swift. The film's production design vividly brings the 1930s period details to life.

Amsterdam blends historical fiction, mystery, action, and humor as the three central characters race to uncover the truth. Russell employs his trademark style of offbeat characters, quick dialogue, and flashy camerawork. Reviews praised the film's ambitious themes and the performances of the talented ensemble cast.

While not without some flaws in its convoluted plot, Amsterdam largely succeeded as an engaging 1930s-set mystery. Carried by the charismatic lead trio and standout supporting turns, the film explores friendship and morality with intelligence and style. With its bold creative vision, Amsterdam added a new twist on the historical mystery genre.
