Ep 2. The Turtle King

In Barkskins season 1 episode 2, titled "The Turtle King," we continue to follow the inhabitants of New France as they try to make a life for themselves in the harsh wilderness. As tensions rise between the English and French, a new character is introduced- the enigmatic Dumont.

Dumont is a wealthy merchant who has come to New France with his beautiful wife, Mathilde, and his loyal servant, Yvon. He quickly becomes embroiled in the power struggles of the colony, as the English seek to take control of the valuable beaver trade.

Trepagny and Melissande return from a failed hunting trip to find their cabin ransacked and their food stolen. Desperate and hungry, they turn to the local native tribes for help. The leader of the tribe, known as the Turtle King, agrees to help them in exchange for a favor.

The favor the Turtle King asks for is significant. He wants Trepagny's assistance in healing his daughter, who has been injured by an English musket. Trepagny is hesitant, as he knows that getting involved with native affairs can be dangerous. However, he ultimately decides to help the Turtle King, and is shocked by what he discovers about the nature of the relationship between the native tribes and the settlers.

As these various storylines unfold, we are treated to stunning visuals of the Canadian wilderness. The show's commitment to portraying historical accuracy is evident in every frame, from the costumes to the set design.
