John sees this as an opportunity to tip the scales in his favor for his political campaign. As he arrives with his wife Susan, he meets Anne's beautiful mother, Caroline. Susan expresses her jealousy towards Caroline's attention from James and others, revealing her own insecurities. Meanwhile, Sophia is helping the Trenchards navigate the social intricacies of the ball, and is approached by Edmund Bellasis, the heir to the Brockenhurst estate. They seem to hit it off, but their conversation is interrupted when John intervenes, revealing a shocking connection between Bellasis and the Trenchards. Susan, feeling neglected, seeks comfort and attention from another guest, and discovers some troubling information about John's past.
