In season 3 episode 1 of the hit crime procedural TV show Bones entitled "Widow's Son In The Windshield", the opening scene sees a car driver nudge what he thinks to be a mannequin on the road only to discover it's actually a dead body. FBI agent Seeley Booth and forensic anthropologist Dr. Temperance Brennan (a.k.a "Bones") arrive on the scene, but quickly realize that something about this case doesn't add up.

The victim, who is identified as a local BMX biker Derek Huff, has been scattered along the road in several different pieces from head to toe. With no clear motive or suspects, Booth and Brennan are left to piece together the evidence.

Brennan begins the investigation with her customary method of looking at the bones for clues. The bones she has to work with are bone fragments, muscles, and other soft tissues from the victim’s corpse. With her meticulous approach and scientific analysis, she is able to determine the cause of death, but Booth can't find a motive for the death which is disturbing because there is no lead.

As they investigate, the team finds that the victim was an extremist performer who participated in the kind of risky, adrenaline-fueled stunts that get BMX bikers to push their limits. As they interviewed Huff's fellow bikers, they learned that Derek was actually planning to make a big career move and become a motorcycle stuntman, a move that didn't sit well with his fellow BMX colleagues. With all the information they have gathered, they conclude that the cause of the death may have come from the victim's association with a bike club.

In their pursuit of the truth, Booth and Brennan visit the victim’s house and find a stash of street drug called “Tazmanian Devil”. Brady, the victim’s friend, used to work as a bartender at the club and introduced him to the drug. “Tazmanian Devil” is a street drug that can create aggressive behavior in users. Booth then theorizes that Huff stumbled upon something he wasn't supposed to see, which ultimately led him to his untimely death.

The duo eventually reaches a breakthrough in the case when they find a piece of metal lodged in the victim’s skull during a CT scan. The metal is from a parent's window glass and this leads Booth and Brennan to speculate that the victim accidentally hit the car which was driven by the killer.

They trace the car bearing the windshield with a widow’s son on it, and then interrogate the owner who is found to have a connection to one of the biker clubs. The club co-owned a business that produces and promotes a TV show featuring extreme sports. The owner was forced to kill the victim because he found out that they sold drugs to young kids at the bike event.

The episode ends with Booth and Brennan catching the murderer just as he tries to flee the country. As usual, Bones is able to wrap up the case and put the killer behind bars with her unmatched investigative techniques. Widow's Son In The Windshield is a thrilling episode that sets the tone for an exciting season of this beloved crime procedural TV show.
