Episode 1 of Catastrophe (2015) introduces us to Rob Norris (played by co-creator Rob Delaney), an American businessman visiting London on a business trip. After a chance meeting in a bar with Irish schoolteacher Sharon Morris (played by co-creator Sharon Horgan), the two hit it off and have a one-night stand.
During their brief encounter, Rob and Sharon have unprotected sex, and Rob returns to the United States the next day. However, several weeks later, Sharon learns that she is pregnant and promptly contacts Rob to inform him of the news. Rob travels back to London to discuss their options, and the two decide to try to make a go of things and raise the baby together.
The rest of the episode follows Rob and Sharon navigating their newfound relationship and the challenges that come with an unplanned pregnancy. Meanwhile, we are introduced to a cast of supporting characters, including Sharon's best friend Fran (Ashley Jensen) and Rob's friend Chris (Mark Bonnar).
Throughout the episode, the chemistry between Rob and Sharon is palpable, and their interactions often veer between hilarious and heartwarming. For instance, an early scene features the two discussing their sexual history over breakfast, with Rob quipping that Sharon had "a lot of sexual partners, but not necessarily a lot of sex." Later, the two visit an ultrasound clinic, where they are told that their baby is healthy but may be at higher risk for Down syndrome due to Sharon's age.
The episode also explores the cultural differences between Rob's American upbringing and Sharon's Irish heritage. There are several scenes where Rob struggles to understand the quirky British slang and customs, such as when he fails to recognize the reference to "cheers big ears" during a toast.
Overall, Episode 1 of Catastrophe sets the stage for what will become a unique and often hilarious take on the romantic comedy genre. The chemistry between Delaney and Horgan is a particular highlight, and the supporting cast adds depth and dimension to the world of the show. Additionally, the episode's candid exploration of issues such as unplanned pregnancy and self-discovery make it a thoughtful and engaging watch.
