Awake was a drama broadcast on the NBC network from March 1 to May 24, 2012. Combining supernatural elements with a police procedural theme, Awake told the story of Detective Michael Britten who finds himself caught between two realities following an auto accident involving his family. In the "red reality", Britten's wife Hannah survived the crash with him. In the "green reality", his son Rex is the survivor. Britten keeps track of the reality he is currently in by wearing either a red or green rubber band on his wrist. He travels between realities by going to sleep in one and waking up in the other. Britten does not know which reality is the truth, and he is being treated by a therapist in each one. While Britten is a detective in both realities, he has a different partner in each. In the green world, he is with the same partner, Detective Isaiah Freeman, that he had prior to the accident. In the red world, Freeman has moved on to another division and Britten is partnered with Detective Efrem Vega, who has been promoted from beat cop. Britten's division captain, Tricia Harper, is also a constant in both realities and plays a pivotal, albeit mysterious role in Britten's situation. Elements of both worlds echo in Britten's work. At home, Britten struggles for balance as he bounces between the green and red worlds. His wife talks of moving to Oregon, which Britten finds strange and sudden after her repainting of the house. Rex secretly rebuilds a motorcycle with a friend and begins a relationship with an attractive girl. The move is postponed after Britten discovers his son's former girlfriend is pregnant, and he and Hannah debate whether to adopt the baby. He also uncovers an underlying plot involving drugs and his captain in the police department. In the green reality, Rex's girlfriend loses the baby, and Britten discovers the identity of the man who caused the auto accident and has been manipulating events all along. While the two realties merge in the end, it remains unclear as to which one is real or a dream, or if Detective Britten is even in fact alive. Despite several award nominations for acting, writing and editing as well as Most Exciting New Series, Awake was canceled after the airing of its 11th episode.
