Charlie Jade is a science fiction series made as a collaboration between Canadian and South African production companies; created by Chris Rowland and Robert Wertheimer the show was produced by the Canadian CHUM production comopany and the South African Industrial Development Corporation. A single season consisting of 20 episodes of 45 minutes each were produced and broadcast initially in 2005; a second season of the show has yet to be produced despite the scripts for more episodes already being produced. Included in the first season is a short episode called Can of Worms that was commissioned after production had ceased to bring viewers up to date on the plot of Charlie Jade during its original broadcast because the story was so complex. Charlie Jade begins with a mysterious multinational corporation called Vektor are conducting an experiment to create a wormhole between the parallel universes that exist alongside reality as we know it. On the site of the experiment in different universes a terrorist called Reena is present while Charlie Jade, a detective is also at the site in another universe. After the explosion Charlie Jade and Reena are thrown into the Cape Town, South Africa closest to the reality of our own world with no way of returning to their own universes. Officials from Vektor now attempt to find Reena as the terrorist is suspected of being responsible for the explosion; the founder of Vektor's son, known by the codename 01 Boxer moves around the universes without the aid of any technology and searches for Reena and Charlie Jade. In the meantime Charlie Jade meets and explains his situation to a conspiracy theorist called Karl Lubinsky who aids him as he searches for a way back to his own universe. Charlie and Karl also discover the experiment to link the parallel universe's has the ability to destroy the universe known as the betaverse in which Charlie Jade and Reena are trapped; Charlie and Karl try to stop Vektor from completing any more experiments.
