Citizen Khan is a British television sitcom that aired on BBC One. The show revolves around the life of Mr. Khan, a Pakistani-British man who is the self-appointed community leader of Sparkhill in Birmingham. In season 1 episode 5, we see Mr. Khan taking on the responsibility of organizing Auntie Nasreen's funeral.
As the episode begins, Auntie Nasreen has unfortunately passed away, and Mr. Khan and his family gather to make arrangements for the funeral. Mr. Khan gets frustrated with his wife, Mrs. Khan, when she suggests that they do not need to spend a lot of money on the funeral since Auntie Nasreen did not have a lot of friends or family. Mr. Khan insists on spending a large amount of money on the funeral because he wants it to be a grand event that shows off his wealth and success.
Throughout the episode, we see the characters preparing for the funeral in their own ways. Shazia, Mr. Khan's daughter, is more concerned with her outfit for the funeral than the actual event, while Mr. Khan's son-in-law Amjad feels uncomfortable with the traditional Pakistani customs at the funeral. Meanwhile, Mr. Khan's son-in-law's mother, Mrs. Malik, tries to organize the catering for the event and takes control of the kitchen.
As the funeral approaches, Mr. Khan discovers that he is running out of money and cannot afford to pay for the extravagant funeral that he had planned. However, he does not want to let anyone know and tries to find ways to cut costs without compromising the grandeur of the event. He even goes so far as to sell his wife's wedding jewelry to help pay for the funeral.
The day of the funeral arrives, and everything seems to be going according to plan until they realize that they forgot to book a hearse for Auntie Nasreen's body. Mr. Khan decides to take matters into his own hands and transport the body in his pink Cadillac. The family and friends gather at the mosque for the funeral prayers, and Mr. Khan insists on leading the prayers himself. However, he struggles with the Urdu language and ends up repeating the same phrase over and over again, which causes confusion and amusement among the mourners.
After the prayers, the funeral procession heads to the graveyard. However, Mr. Khan's Cadillac breaks down on the way, and the family has to walk the rest of the way to the graveyard, with Auntie Nasreen's body in tow. They finally arrive at the graveyard, and the funeral ends with a comedy of errors, including Mr. Khan falling into the open grave and the wrong grave being dug for Auntie Nasreen.
Overall, Citizen Khan season 1 episode 5 is a hilarious and heartwarming portrayal of a family coming together to honor the memory of a loved one. Despite the cultural differences and comedic mishaps, the family shows their love and respect for Auntie Nasreen in their own unique way.
