Conan Season 7 Episode 101 Elle Fanning, Ally Maki, James Acaster
- June 20, 2017
Elle Fanning, Ally Maki, and James Acaster join Conan O'Brien on the couch for this episode of Conan season 7. The segment kicks off with a discussion about Fanning's new film, "The Great," in which she plays Catherine the Great. Fanning divulges that she had to learn a Russian accent for the role, but found that it was easier for her because she had previously learned an English accent for a different role. The conversation then transitions to Maki, an actress and writer who is known for her work in films such as "Toy Story 4" and TV shows like "Wrecked." Maki and Fanning bond over their shared experiences growing up in Los Angeles and how they each got their start in acting.
Comedian James Acaster joins the group and depicts some of his experiences with awkward interactions with people. He talks about how he has gone through living situations with people that he didn't exactly like such as living with an alcoholic. "Even if the person you live with is annoying, you want them to enjoy the little things in life, like a nice walk or a great tv show. But with somebody with an addiction, the little things often pale in comparison to the addiction," he concludes.
In the next segment, Conan challenges the guests to a "What's in the Box?" game. One by one, they feel around in a box to guess what object is inside. There are moments of laughter, screams and fear once it's revealed what's inside the box. Fanning and Acaster are noticeably skittish, while Maki takes it all in stride. They all agree that no more than five items should be in the box at any given time.
Next up, in honor of the NFL season, Conan stages his very own mini-Superbowl featuring three audience members to compete in various “football” challenges - all of which are ridiculous and impossible. The winner of each round is awarded a random prize like a box of chocolates and a t-shirt. The segment wraps up in classic Conan style with an awkward hug between him and the contestants.
The final guest of the evening was actor and singer Adam Lambert who talks about his upcoming Vegas residency, his new EP, and how he was recently able to pay tribute to Queen frontman Freddie Mercury who Lambert has been touring with for several years now. They discuss how great of a music icon Mercury was and is. Lambert's EP is a testament to Freddie Mercury as he was inspired by Mercury in making it and had the blessings of Queen in doing so.
All in all, this episode of Conan delivered a good mix of humor and entertainment. Conan's guests were candid about their experiences and their conversations were engaging and lively. From Fanning to Acaster, there was never a dull moment. Conan’s Superbowl segment, though silly, was entertaining while still keeping a sports theme. Adam Lambert, performing live at the end of the show, was a great ending to a fun episode. Overall, season 7 episode 101 of Conan provided an entertaining hour of television.
