Rebecca Bunch is the perfect embodiment of the successful, independent woman. But she is flawed. Her personal life is in shambles, and her obsession for her ex-boyfriend Josh Chan threatens to tear her apart. She views Josh as the missing link in her life, the one who can complete her. In "Josh and I Work on a Case!," Josh asks Rebecca for her help to win over his boss with a case. Unable to resist the temptation, Rebecca quickly agrees, hoping to use this opportunity to get closer to Josh.
The episode starts with Rebecca waking up to another day in Los Angeles. As she prepares for work, she becomes fixated on her reflection in the mirror, questioning her choices in life and love. She admits to herself that working with Josh is not only an opportunity to win his affection, but also a chance to make up for past wrongs in her professional life.
Rebecca heads to work where she and Josh discuss their assignment. As they start working, Rebecca's mind drifts off to her fantasies of being with Josh. In reality, their partnership is a mess. Rebecca becomes overly aggressive, trying to impress Josh with her legal knowledge while Josh struggles with the workload.
Their case involves a dispute between a client and a vendor over a contract. The more they work, the more Rebecca realizes she has feelings for Josh. Despite their differences, she wants to make it work. At a pivotal moment, Josh compliments Rebecca on her legal expertise, and she sees it as a sign that they could be something more.
Meanwhile, Rebecca's best friend Paula becomes concerned about her obsession with Josh and the toll it is taking on her mental health. She confronts Rebecca at work, demanding that she put her needs before Josh's. Rebecca brushes off her concerns and says she is finally achieving the happiness she has been searching for.
As the case becomes more complex, Josh starts to feel the pressure. He turns to Rebecca for help, giving her a glimpse of the inner Josh. This only bolsters her feelings of affection and admiration, making it more difficult to distinguish fantasy from reality.
As they work late into the night to prepare for their pitch, Rebecca and Josh bond over their shared love of musicals. They sing, dance, and joke around before finally presenting their case to their boss. Despite their efforts, they lose the case, leaving Rebecca feeling defeated and dejected.
The next day, Rebecca is invited to a swanky party thrown by Josh's boss. She sees it as an opportunity to impress Josh and get closer to him. At the party, Rebecca gets caught up in the glitz and glamour, losing sight of what really matters. She also ends up getting drunk and making a fool of herself in front of Josh.
After embarrassing herself, Rebecca drowns her sorrows with Paula, who is still wary of Rebecca's obsession with Josh. But Rebecca is still convinced that Josh is the only one for her. She tells Paula that she would rather live with the pain of knowing she can't have Josh than the regret of never going after him.
As the episode ends, Rebecca is left to ponder the meaning of her life and what she really wants. She faces a choice: continue down the rabbit hole of chasing her fantasy with Josh or start to live a life that is true to herself.
