Rebecca Bunch is your classic Type-A overachiever who moved to West Covina, California in pursuit of her ex-boyfriend, Josh Chan. After a series of events, including a romantic dalliance with Josh's best friend Greg and a stint in a mental institution, Rebecca and Josh finally got together. But their relationship has been rocky, to say the least.
In "Why Is Josh in a Bad Mood?," the penultimate episode of Crazy Ex-Girlfriend's first season, Rebecca faces yet another hurdle in her relationship with Josh. This time, it's not about her insecurities or Josh's indecisiveness - it's about his bad mood.
The episode opens with a cheerful, upbeat musical number called "You Stupid Bitch," which may seem odd considering the title. But as the song goes on, it becomes clear that Rebecca is berating herself for her behavior in the previous episode, where she tried to sabotage Josh's sister's wedding in a misguided attempt to win Josh back.
As she rehearses for her friend Valencia's yoga class, Rebecca learns that Josh has been in a bad mood all week, and no one seems to know why. Valencia, Josh's girlfriend, is particularly worried and asks Rebecca to help cheer him up. Rebecca agrees, eager to prove her commitment to Josh.
But when Rebecca tries to talk to Josh about his mood, he shuts her down. They end up having a fight, with Josh accusing Rebecca of being selfish and Rebecca accusing Josh of not communicating his feelings. The argument reaches a boiling point when Josh storms out of the apartment.
Rebecca is left feeling confused and hurt, and she turns to her therapist, Dr. Shin, for help. Dr. Shin encourages Rebecca to examine why she feels so strongly about Josh's mood and what it means for their relationship. Through a series of flashbacks and musical numbers, we see Rebecca's relationship with her father and how it has affected her perception of what a healthy relationship should look like.
As the episode comes to a close, Rebecca has a breakthrough. She realizes that she has been focusing too much on Josh's mood and not enough on her own emotions. She decides to take a step back from their relationship and focus on herself for a while.
"Why Is Josh in a Bad Mood?" is a poignant exploration of how our past experiences and relationships can affect our present behavior. It's also a reminder that sometimes, the best thing we can do for ourselves and our relationships is to take a step back and focus on our own well-being.
