In the fifth episode of the first season of Dad's Army, titled "The Showing Up of Corporal Jones", the Home Guard members of Walmington-on-Sea are preparing for a parade to mark the anniversary of the founding of the town, and money needs to be raised for the event.
The men come up with the idea of staging a concert, and all volunteers are willing to participate, except for Corporal Jones, who initially refuses to join in due to a crisis of confidence and the fear that he will "make a fool of himself" in front of the townsfolk.
Meanwhile, Captain Mainwaring and Sergeant Wilson are contacted by the local police, who inform them of an impending visit from a high-ranking Army officer, who is to inspect the Home Guard's readiness and capabilities.
This news puts pressure on the group to perform well, and as rehearsals for the concert continue, it becomes increasingly clear that Corporal Jones is reluctant to take part in the event.
He confides in Sergeant Wilson that he has a hidden past as a traveling performer, and is afraid that his old stage fright will resurface and embarrass him. Wilson convinces him to push through his fears and perform in the show after all.
As the day of the parade arrives, the Home Guard members put on a varied show of musical and comedic acts, with Corporal Jones managing to overcome his stage fright and deliver a crowd-pleasing performance.
The Army inspector, impressed by the display and the group's overall readiness, commends Captain Mainwaring and his men on their efforts and declares that he has no reservations in the event of enemy invasion.
Despite encountering some setbacks along the way, the Home Guard of Walmington-on-Sea has come together to successfully put on a show and prove their worth to the military authorities.
