In the anime series Darker Than Black, we are introduced to a world where a strange phenomenon known as the "Hell's Gate" has appeared in Tokyo, changing the landscape and altering the night sky forever. Strange, human-like beings known as "Contractors" have emerged, each with their own unique set of abilities. These Contractors must fulfill their "contracts" in order to use their powers, which can range from anything such as teleportation to controlling electricity.

Episode 1, "The Fallen Star of a Contract, Part 1," begins with a mysterious object crashing into the Earth's surface late one night. The next morning, the authorities discover a massive crater where the object had landed. However, this isn't just any ordinary crash. The object is revealed to be a meteorite that contains a powerful and dangerous energy source. The government decides to keep the discovery of the meteorite under wraps, and instead sends out a group of Contractors to investigate and retrieve the object.

Our protagonist, Hei, is introduced in this episode as he goes about his day working as a seemingly ordinary Chinese exchange student in Tokyo. However, it's quickly revealed that he is actually a powerful Contractor known as the "Black Reaper" who is working under the cover of a student. Hei is tasked with retrieving the meteorite, along with a team of other Contractors, each with their own abilities.

As Hei and his team make their way towards the crash site, they are confronted by an opposing group of Contractors who have also been instructed to retrieve the meteorite. These Contractors are led by a mysterious woman known as "The Doll," who has the power to control objects with her mind. She warns Hei to stay away from the meteorite, claiming that it's too dangerous for Contractors to handle. However, Hei and his team continue onwards, ignoring her warning.

Eventually, Hei and his team make it to the meteorite, but things quickly go awry. The object emits a dangerous radiation that incapacitates most of the Contractors, leaving only Hei and one other member of his team standing. Hei manages to retrieve the meteorite, but in doing so, he draws the attention of a group of government soldiers who are also on the scene. Hei and his remaining teammate must fight their way out of the area while avoiding the soldiers and their advanced weaponry.

The episode ends with Hei returning to his normal life as a student, but it's clear that something has changed. He is haunted by visions of a young girl calling out to him, and we see a glimpse of a mysterious organization that appears to be pulling the strings behind the scenes. It's clear that Hei's life will never be the same again as he is pulled deeper into the dangerous world of the Contractors.

Overall, the first episode of Darker Than Black does an excellent job of setting up the premise and introducing the main characters. The animation is top-notch, with plenty of stunning action scenes and interesting character designs. The episode leaves enough questions unanswered to keep the viewer engaged and excited to see what happens next. With its unique take on the superhero genre and dark, atmospheric tone, Darker Than Black is a must-watch for anime fans looking for something new and exciting.
