- 1 Season
Deadman Wonderland is a TV series that was written by Jinsei Kataoka and airs on the Adult Swim network. The show is illustrated by Kazuma Kondou, who also illustrated and wrote Eureka Seven, published by Shonen Ace. The anime adaption features content from 21 chapters of the story. The story begins after mainland Japan is rocked by a massive earthquake, destroying most of Tokyo, much of it sinking into the ocean. Ten years have passed, and student, Ganta Igarashi is attending the Nagano Prefecture middle school. Ganta is an escapee and earthquake survivor, however, he does not have any memory of the devastation that had occurred. Ganta lives a normal life until a stranger covered in crimson armor and blood floats through the windows of his classroom. The Red Man kills the entire class except for Ganta, but he embeds a crystal shard into his chest. Ganta is declared the sole suspect a few days after the massacre. After a fast trial, Ganta receives a death sentence and is then incarcerated at a huge prison resembling a theme park, called Deadman Wonderland. Deadman Wonderland is the only privately operated Japanese prison. Built on ground zero after the earthquake, its prisoners are from the entire region. The prison is used as a theme park for unwitting tourists and public to raise funds for city redevelopment. The prison and theme park is run by the prisoners, however, the general public is not aware of this and also does not know about the cruel survival games that inmates are subjected to. Prisoners are regularly maimed or killed for entertainment purposes. The prison also hosts a game called Carnival Corpse. Kept secret, the game involves anonymous, wealthy donors who pay to witness death matches between prisoners called Deadmen. These inmates have been defeated, survived and had parts of their anatomy removed for research. Losers of these games spin a slot machine that chooses what body part is to be removed. The live show is simultaneously broadcast to other prisoners. Winners are awarded large amounts of Cast Points, candies that can save their lives and other kinds of prizes. Inmates and death row prisoners wear special collars serving as locators, life monitors and stunners that follow their every move. For example, if a prisoner does not eat the candy antidote every three days that is provided in exchange for Cast Points, he or she will immediately die. The prison guard staff has autonomous power to discipline inmates, which very often ends in bloodshed and is sometimes fatal. The Deadman Wonderland series has been licensed by Funimation Entertainment and is scheduled to be released in 2012.
