In the ninth episode of Darker Than Black season 2, titled "They Met One Day, Unexpectedly," viewers are taken on a journey through two separate storylines that later intersect.

In one storyline, Hei, Yin, and Mao infiltrate a security company's building to steal a device that will help them locate their missing comrades. Along the way, they encounter a Contractor who has the ability to manipulate shadows. This Contractor refuses to leave his position as a guard and fights Hei, ultimately losing and being taken down.

Meanwhile, Suou and July are on a school trip to Okinawa, but things quickly take a sinister turn when they discover that they are being followed. The person following them is revealed to be Tanya, a Contractor who has the ability to manipulate water and is on the hunt for Suou and her ability to shape-shift. Tanya attacks Suou and July, but they are rescued by a mysterious boy named Shion who also has the power of shape-shifting.

As the episode progresses, the two storylines converge when Hei and his team arrive in Okinawa in pursuit of their missing comrades. They discover that Shion is actually one of their missing friends and that his shape-shifting ability was used to aid in their escape from a previous battle. With the help of Shion, the group is able to fend off Tanya and her water-manipulating abilities.

The episode comes to a dramatic conclusion with Hei and his team successfully retrieving the device they were seeking, but with new questions and mysteries arising in the wake of their discoveries. "They Met One Day, Unexpectedly" serves as a thrilling and dynamic addition to the second season of Darker Than Black, leaving viewers on the edge of their seats and eager to see what comes next.
