As the story continues to unfold, we find ourselves with the newly-formed Justice Society of America, patrolling the streets of Blue Valley. Pat Dugan (Luke Wilson), the former sidekick to the original Starman, finds himself taking on the role of mentor and protector to the newest member of the team, his step-daughter Courtney (Brec Bassinger), who has recently discovered that she is the cosmic staff's rightful owner.
The fifth episode of the season entitled "Hourman and Dr. Mid-Nite" shifts its focus to two other JSA members, Rex Tyler (Lou Ferrigno Jr.), also known as Hourman and Charles McNider (Henry Thomas), also known as Dr. Mid-Nite. As the episode begins, we see Rex Tyler with his Hourman powers, which allow him to have super strength and speed for an hour every day, in the midst of a drug bust gone bad. He ends up getting shot and with his powers momentarily depleted, he's left vulnerable. This event serves as the catalyst for the rest of the episode.
Meanwhile, Charles McNider, the former surgeon who is married to a much younger woman, Beth (Anjelika Washington), is adjusting to the lifestyle change of being a superhero. He's been keeping his identity secret from his wife, but as things ramp up, he's forced to reveal his true self.
The episode delves deeper into the backstories of the two characters, revealing more about Rex's relationship with his wife and child, while providing further insight into Charles' work as a scientist. We're also introduced to new characters like Justin (Mark Ashworth), a man with ties to JSA's past.
As the story unfolds, the JSA must not only grapple with their personal struggles, but also their growing responsibilities and the looming threat of the Injustice Society of America. The episode does a great job of intertwining character development and emotional depth with action and suspense, as the JSA seeks out the ISA's hold over Blue Valley's drug trade.
Overall, "Hourman and Dr. Mid-Nite" is a gripping and exciting episode that further cements DC's Stargirl as a strong contender within the superhero genre. The show continues to deliver strong performances from its cast and engaging plotlines that keep viewers invested in the characters' journeys. The episode leaves viewers eager to see where the series will go next as the JSA continues to come up against the ISA.
