After being given a powerful staff, high school sophomore Courtney Whitmore decides to become a superhero and takes on the mantle of Stargirl. In the fourth episode of the series, titled "Wildcat," Courtney begins to assemble her new team of heroes in order to take on the Injustice Society, a villainous organization that is wreaking havoc in their small town.
The episode opens with Courtney attempting to convince her step-father, Pat Dugan (played by Luke Wilson), to let her recruit some of her classmates to help with her mission. Pat, who is himself a former superhero known as the sidekick to the Star-Spangled Kid, initially balks at the idea, but eventually relents and allows Courtney to approach her friends.
Although most of the students are hesitate to get involved, one girl stands out: Yolanda Montez (played by Yvette Monreal), who immediately shows an interest in fighting crime and takes on the role of Wildcat. Yolanda, who had previously been known as a popular and confident cheerleader, has been struggling since a scandal ruined her reputation and forced her to leave school for several months.
As Courtney and Yolanda begin to train together, Yolanda reveals her backstory and the reasons behind her desire to become a hero. She also shows a natural talent for fighting and seems to be a quick learner, much to Courtney's delight. In addition to Yolanda, Courtney also approaches Beth Chapel (played by Anjelika Washington), a quirky and tech-savvy student who takes on the mantle of Doctor Mid-Nite.
As the trio of heroes begins to work together, they discover that they may be in over their heads when they come up against the villainous Brainwave (played by Christopher James Baker). Brainwave has the ability to control minds and is a formidable opponent for the inexperienced heroes.
Throughout the episode, we see Courtney struggling to balance her school work, her superhero duties, and her family life. She has to sneak out of the house at night in order to fight crime, and she struggles to keep her secret identity hidden from her mother and younger brother.
Overall, "Wildcat" is an action-packed episode that moves the series forward with introducing new characters to the mix and giving more backstory to the existing ones. It also sets the stage for future conflicts between the heroes and the Injustice Society, as well as raising questions about Courtney's parentage and why exactly she was given the powerful staff.
