The Magic School Bus television show is based on the educational book series of the same name written by Joanna Cole and illustrated by Bruce Degen. In the book series, a classroom full of students are led on exciting and magical field trips by their teacher, Miss Frizzle. Whatever subject the children are studying comes alive when the class leaves for a field trip in their Magic School Bus.

The television show takes that premise and builds on it to take the children and their very unique teacher on even more thrilling field trips. Miss Frizzle changes her clothes based on where the field trip will take them (a jellyfish print dress for an underwater adventure, etc.) When they leave for a trip to the beach, the bus magically turns into a submarine and the students all get to experience life as sea creatures! Miss Frizzle always has scuba gear or any other supplies they might need in her bag, of course.

At the end of each episode, Miss Frizzle and the Magic School Bus always get the students back to school safe and sound. Then Miss Frizzle's dress design gives a hint about what the next episode will be.
