Punky Brewster is a television program that aired for 2 years on network television and 2 additional years in first run syndication. The show starred a young Soleil Moon Frey as the title character, Penelope Punky Brewster. Punky is a rambunctious tom boy who was abandoned by her father as a child and later by her mother at a suburban shopping mall in Chicago. Punky Brewster led to a fashion trend amongst young teens in the 1980's, she wore neon colored clothes with wacky matching accessories. After being ditched by her parents, Punky goes on to move into a vacant apartment with her dog named Brandon. She finds a friend in Cherie Johnson. Another tenant in the building is an elderly widower, Henry Warnimont. In the show's pilot episode Punky and Henry meet. He is initially very gruff but when he learns of her story he decides that he would like to take care of Punky and be her official legal guardian. The relationship between Punky and Henry grows and despite some interference from social services, Henry is officially designated as Punky's foster parent. The show has many comedic moments surrounding Henry's first attempt at single parenthood. Soleil Moon Frey brings a lot of enthusiasm to her role and debuted a signature catchphrase Punky Power that she would shout when one of her plans was coming together. Punky had a lot of friends in her new school including Cherie and Allen, a math nerd in Punky's class. Also she befriends a stuck up rich girl, Margeaux. During the run of the show, it would have several special episodes. A big portion of the second season centered on Henry being hospitalized for a serious stomach condition and that led to Punky being forced back into foster care. Another episode centered on the all too real Challenger space shuttle disaster. There was also an episode when Cherie played hide and seek by hiding in an abandoned freezer and had to be given C.P.R. to be resuscitated after she stopped breathing. Another special episode focused on fire safety. Punky Brewster was immensely popular among young teens and was later spun off to an animated series.
