In Deadwood season 1 episode 10, titled "Mister Wu," tensions rise as the people of Deadwood prepare for the arrival of a powerful Chinese businessman, Mr. Wu. The episode opens with Al Swearengen, the owner of the Gem Saloon, trying to figure out how to best handle Mr. Wu's arrival. Wu is bringing with him a shipment of opium that Al desperately needs to keep his customers happy, but he doesn't want to get on the wrong side of the enigmatic businessman.

Meanwhile, tensions are also running high between Sheriff Seth Bullock and Alma Garrett, the widow who owns the town's only bank. Bullock has been investigating the death of Alma's husband and suspects foul play, but Alma is reluctant to get involved and insists that she doesn't know anything.

As the day of Mr. Wu's arrival draws closer, the tension in the town becomes palpable. When Wu finally arrives, he is accompanied by several Chinese workers and his loyal lieutenant, Lee. Al greets them with a tense politeness, offering them food and drink while sizing up his new business partner. For his part, Wu is cold and inscrutable, speaking little and observing everything.

The interaction between Al and Wu is fascinating to watch, as the two men feel each other out and try to determine who has the upper hand. Wu is clearly a formidable opponent, but Al is nothing if not resourceful. As the episode progresses, their relationship becomes increasingly complex, with both men learning to trust and respect each other despite their differences.

The episode's other major plotline revolves around Reverend Smith, the town's resident preacher who has been suffering from a debilitating illness. As his condition worsens, he becomes increasingly erratic and unstable, ranting and raving incoherently. At one point, he even attacks a Chinese worker in the street, causing a scene.

Despite his outbursts, however, it's clear that Reverend Smith is deeply respected and loved by the people of Deadwood. When he finally passes away, the entire town comes out to pay their respects, with even the normally surly Al Swearengen showing his softer side.

Overall, "Mister Wu" is a powerful and compelling episode, one that highlights the many different facets of Deadwood and its inhabitants. With its complex characters, intricate plotlines, and stunning visuals, it's a testament to the skill and talent of everyone involved in the making of this incredible series. Whether you're a fan of Westerns, drama, or simply great television, this episode is not to be missed.
