Discovering the World takes viewers on a journey to some of the most unique and beautiful places on Earth. In season 1, episode 1, we visit the Maldives - a small island nation located in the Indian Ocean, known for its stunning crystal clear waters, white sand beaches, and over 2,000 islands.

The episode starts off with a breathtaking aerial shot of the Maldives, showing the vast ocean and endless islands dotted across it. We are then introduced to our host, who is a local Maldivian, born and raised on one of the islands. He gives us some background information about the Maldives - how it was formed from coral reefs and is now a popular tourist destination.

The host takes us on a tour of some of the islands, starting with the capital city of Male. He shows us the bustling markets, colorful buildings, and the famous Hukuru Miskiy mosque. We also see some of the island's unique architecture, which includes colorful wooden houses built on stilts over the water.

Next, we visit one of the more remote islands, where we meet some of the locals who make a living from fishing and cultivating coconuts. We learn about the importance of coconut in Maldivian culture - it is used for food, oil, and even as a building material.

The host then takes us snorkeling in the crystal clear waters around the island. We see an incredible array of marine life, including colorful fish, sea turtles, and even a few sharks. We learn about the importance of preserving the coral reefs, which are an essential part of the ecosystem and a major tourist attraction.

As the sun sets, we join some of the locals for a traditional Maldivian feast. We try some of the local delicacies, including fish curry, coconut sambal, and spicy chicken, all served on plates made from coconut shell.

The next day, we visit an island where a luxury resort has been built. We see the stunning overwater bungalows and learn about the different types of activities on offer, including snorkeling, scuba diving, and spa treatments.

We also learn about the challenges of sustainable tourism in the Maldives. The islands are incredibly vulnerable to rising sea levels and climate change, and efforts are being made to reduce the environmental footprint of the resorts.

The episode ends with a beautiful sunset over the water, as the host reflects on the unique beauty and culture of the Maldives. We are left with a newfound appreciation for this incredible island nation, and a desire to one day visit and discover more of the 2,000 islands that make up the Maldives.
