In Doubt season 1 episode 4 titled Clean Burn, viewers are introduced to another intricate story arc, which is typical of the show's style. The episode opens with Bishop Paul and his friend Nathaniel having a friendly conversation, with the Bishop expressing his doubts about taking his current job. However, the scene shifts to an unlikely character, one of the show's stars, lawyer Sadie Ellis, who has been asked to represent a drug addict who is on trial for arson. The client claims she is innocent of the charges and that someone framed her for the crime.

Sadie takes up the challenge of clearing her client's name. The woman’s backstory comes to light, and the more Sadie delves into the case, the more she realizes that her client may indeed be innocent. The defendant is a victim of the opioid epidemic and has been struggling with addiction for years. The addict has an unlikely ally — Nate, the Bishop's friend, who runs a support group for addicts. They are both trying to get the woman back on the straight and narrow.

During the investigation, Sadie is convinced that there is something unusual about the deposition made by a firefighter, who witnessed the arson that destroyed the woman’s apartment building. Sadie questions why the man’s testimony appears rehearsed, and he appears to be hiding something. As a result, Sadie decides to turn to her trusted private investigator, Albert, to find out what the witness may be hiding.

Meanwhile, Jay, one of Sadie’s colleagues at the law firm, has his hands full when his sister is admitted to the hospital after consuming a laced cocktail. As a result, Jay discovers that his sister is involved in a rebirthing ceremony, and she may be in grave danger. Jay learns that his sister has been tricked into believing that by going through the ceremony, she will be reborn and see herself in a new light. The ceremony involves people holding a sheet above someone who is naked and dousing them with water, asking them to let go of their past and embrace a new life. The ceremony has gone horribly wrong, and Jay decides to work behind the scenes to prevent his sister from suffering any harm.

In the long run, Sadie’s hard work pays off, and the court acquits her client of all charges. The drug addict is grateful to Sadie for believing in her, and she uses the opportunity to begin a new life. Nate is thrilled that the woman has a second chance at living a stable life while the Bishop is happy to have averted a possible scandal at the church. Jay confronts his sister, and they have an honest conversation about her ordeal. Eventually, Jay’s sister agrees to receive help to overcome her addiction and dangerous habits.

In conclusion, Doubt season 1 episode 4 is a masterclass in storytelling, as it not only tackles different problems but offers considerable depth to its characters. The episode explores addiction, religion, and family ties in the most enthralling way. The courtroom drama is absorbing, but what sets it apart is how nuanced and relatable the individuals involved are. The audience is left feeling as though they know the characters intimately.
