Drunk History season 5 episode 9, titled "Heists," is a hilarious and informative look into some of the most outrageous thefts in history. As with all episodes of the show, this one features comedians getting drunk and telling fascinating stories while actors act out their narrations.
The episode opens with host Derek Waters introducing the theme of heists and explaining that although stealing is obviously bad, some of the stories are just too entertaining not to share. The first story is about the theft of the Mona Lisa, which was actually stolen in 1911 and not recovered until two years later. The narrator tells the story from the perspective of the man who stole it, explaining how he was able to sneak into the Louvre and walk out with the painting under his arm. The actors play out the theft as described, making the whole thing seem both absurd and impressive at the same time.
Next up is a story about a famous London bank robbery that took place in 1971. The drunken narrator describes the planning and execution of the heist, which involved a group of professional criminals tunneling their way into the bank's vault. The actors do an excellent job of portraying the tension and excitement of the robbery, making the viewer feel like they're right there in the bank with the thieves.
The third story is about a more modern heist: the theft of millions of dollars worth of jewels from an exclusive Parisian hotel in 2014. The drunken narrator explains how the thieves were able to gain access to the hotel room where the jewels were being kept, and how they were able to evade the police for weeks afterwards. The actors once again do an excellent job of bringing the story to life, making it seem like a thrilling game of cat and mouse between the thieves and the authorities.
The final story is perhaps the most absurd of all: the theft of a giant wheel of cheese from a small town in Wisconsin. The narrator describes how the town's beloved 1,200-pound cheese wheel was reportedly stolen by a group of university students, who then fled to Canada to avoid prosecution. The actors play the parts of the cheese-loving townspeople, making the viewer feel both amused and sympathetic towards the poor folks who lost their favorite food.
Throughout the episode, the drunken narrators offer insightful (if slurred) commentary on the heists they're describing, inserting jokes and asides that make the stories even more amusing. As always, the show strikes an excellent balance between humor and education, leaving the viewer both entertained and informed.
Overall, Drunk History season 5 episode 9 is a must-see for fans of the show, as well as anyone who loves a good heist story. From the daring theft of the Mona Lisa to the ridiculous cheese caper in Wisconsin, this episode is packed with entertaining tales of criminal activity that will make you laugh, gasp, and maybe even want to try your hand at a little thievery yourself (although we do not condone that sort of thing).
