In the first episode of Ed Stafford: Left for Dead season 1, titled Madagascar: The Coastal Mangroves, Ed Stafford is dropped off on the remote island of Madagascar, one of the largest islands in the world. Stafford has an ambitious goal to trek through the island’s treacherous terrain and find his way to the opposite side of the island, surviving only off the land and his own ingenuity. This journey is made even more difficult as Stafford starts his trek in the coastal mangroves, a treacherous environment with threatening wildlife and no clear paths.
As the episode begins, Stafford is shown on a helicopter headed to the coastal mangroves. He explains that he has been dropped off with only basic gear, including some clothes, a machete, and a few other basic supplies. His food and water will need to come entirely from the environment around him. Stafford looks at the dense jungle canopy below him uncertainly, knowing that he will need to make it through this environment somehow if he hopes to complete his journey.
Once Stafford is on the ground, he wastes no time getting started. He first makes his way through the dense mangroves, using his machete to clear a path as he goes. The mangroves are incredibly thick and tangled, and Stafford is constantly on the lookout for snakes and other dangerous wildlife that might be lurking underfoot.
As he makes his way deeper into the mangroves, Stafford comes across an old abandoned fishing shack. There, he finds evidence that other people have been through the area and survived, but that doesn't alleviate the danger still present. He finds a small amount of fishing gear and some discarded food cans, which he collects to repurpose for his own survival. He also notes how valuable it is to find trash in areas like this, providing much needed items such as plastic bags and junk that can be converted into tools.
Stafford's journey quickly becomes more perilous when he comes across a massive river. The river is deep and fast-moving, and Stafford knows he cannot swim across it. Instead, he's forced to continue following the river upstream until he can find a place to cross. Along the way, Stafford faces many other challenges, including a monkey that steals his food, giant spiders that crawl across his face at night, and leeches that attach themselves to his skin.
Despite these challenges, Stafford perseveres. He makes a fire to cook the snake that he killed for dinner, he conserves water by boiling it with hot rocks and filters it multiple times, and he even fashions himself a fishing spear out of a stick. As the episode ends, Stafford is shown continuing on his journey, determined to reach the other side of the island no matter what obstacles lie in his path.
Overall, Ed Stafford: Left for Dead season 1 episode 1 provides a thrilling introduction to the show. The episode is full of suspenseful moments as Stafford makes his way through the treacherous mangrove forests, and it's fascinating to see how he uses his survival skills to find food and water in such a challenging environment. The episode also sets the stage for future episodes, hinting at the incredible challenges Stafford will face as he continues his journey across Madagascar.
