In the first episode of Encounter, we are introduced to Cha Soo Hyun, a wealthy divorced woman in her 30s who is the daughter of a prominent politician. She is traveling to Cuba on business and is accompanied by her friend and coworker Ms. Nam.
As they arrive in Cuba, Cha Soo Hyun seems distant and disinterested in the sights and sounds around her. She is preoccupied with her work and her personal life, which seems to be in shambles. We learn that she has a young son who lives with her ex-husband and that she is constantly under pressure from her father and the public to maintain a certain image.
Meanwhile, a young man named Kim Jin Hyuk is at the airport waiting for his friend. As he waits, he notices Cha Soo Hyun and cannot take his eyes off of her. He is captivated by her beauty and her sense of aloofness. When his friend arrives, he tries to shake off his interest in her and join in the festivities of their vacation.
However, fate seems to have other plans as the two keep bumping into each other throughout their trip. At first, Cha Soo Hyun is annoyed by Kim Jin Hyuk's persistent attention but she soon begins to warm up to him. They go on a tour together and end up spending the day getting to know each other.
As the night falls, they end up at a beach party and share a deep and emotional conversation. Cha Soo Hyun talks about her struggle to be her own person and escape the societal expectations placed on her as a woman and as the daughter of a politician. Kim Jin Hyuk listens intently and shares his own story of personal struggle.
As their connection grows stronger, they find themselves drawn to each other and share a kiss under the stars. But their happiness is short-lived as they are interrupted by Ms. Nam who tells Cha Soo Hyun that her father needs to speak to her urgently.
Cha Soo Hyun is torn between her personal happiness and her duty to her family and her country. She decides to leave Cuba early and parts ways with Kim Jin Hyuk, leaving him with a heavy heart.
The episode ends with both Cha Soo Hyun and Kim Jin Hyuk being back in South Korea, with Cha Soo Hyun plagued by doubts about her decision to leave Kim Jin Hyuk behind. Kim Jin Hyuk, on the other hand, starts to realize that he is falling deeply in love with her and cannot stop thinking about her.
Overall, episode one of Encounter sets up the premise of the show - two people from vastly different backgrounds who find themselves drawn to each other despite societal expectations.
