A couple from Toronto, Ontario purchased a beautiful 19th century farmhouse without ever seeing it in person. While the home had many charming features, such as a grand staircase and original woodwork, it was in need of a serious upgrade. Hosts and renovation experts, contractor Colin McAllister and interior designer Justin Ryan, take on the challenge of transforming the outdated property into a stunning, modern farmhouse while staying true to its historic roots.
The episode begins with the couple, Amber and Mike, explaining why they decided to buy the property unseen. They fell in love with the photos online and took a leap of faith. Once they received the keys, they were disappointed to find a home with outdated wallpaper, old carpets, and a kitchen that looked like it hadn't been updated since the 1970s. However, Amber and Mike could see the potential and were eager to work with Colin and Justin to turn their dream farmhouse into a reality.
First, Colin and his team tackle the exterior of the home. They remove the old, worn roof and update it with modern metal sheets, which gives the house a fresh new look. Then they replace the rotting wooden porch with a beautiful stone landing and steps. Finally, they install new windows and paint the exterior a cheery yellow color.
Inside, Justin works his magic by creating a modern farmhouse aesthetic that still highlights the home's traditional features. For instance, in the grand entryway, Justin keeps the original wooden staircase but adds fresh white paint to make it pop. He also brings in a large vintage rug and modern lighting pieces to create a welcoming entryway.
Next, Justin and his team tackle the kitchen, which is in desperate need of a complete overhaul. The cabinets are old and dingy, and the appliances are decades out of date. Justin decides to give the kitchen a bold makeover by painting the walls a deep green color and replacing the cabinets with modern, sleek white ones. He adds a large island with a marble countertop, which doubles as a dining area. The space is filled with natural light, thanks to the new windows Colin installed, and Justin adds some playful pops of color with vintage kitchen accessories.
One of the most impressive renovations in the episode is the master bedroom. The room is huge, but it feels cramped because of the low ceilings and dark, outdated wallpaper. Justin decides to transform the space by removing a section of the ceiling, exposing the stunning wooden beams above. He also adds fresh white paint to the walls and a warm beige color to the ceiling to create a more open and airy feeling. He then incorporates modern furniture, such as a large platform bed and matching nightstands, to make the space feel more contemporary.
Throughout the episode, Colin and Justin also work on various other projects, including updating the bathrooms, creating a cozy reading nook, and installing new hardwood flooring. The couple is thrilled with the finished product and feels like they have finally moved into their dream farmhouse. Not only is the home beautiful and functional, but it also has retained its traditional charm.
Overall, this episode of Farmhouse Facelift is a testament to the power of renovation and design. By working with modern elements while still maintaining the traditional character of the home, Colin and Justin have created a stunning new farmhouse that Amber and Mike are proud to call their own.
