As a valuable opportunity approaches, the dancers at the American Ballet Company are put to the test in Flesh and Bone season 1 episode 5, "M.I.A." With their hopes set high, the dancers ready themselves to audition for the star-studded Broadway choreographer, Oscar Lusth. With great power comes great responsibility, and Lusth is not one to take the venture lightly. His observations are keen, and his demands are exacting. The dancers know that this is their chance to prove their worth and show their talent.

On the other hand, Claire (Sarah Hay), the central character, is grappling with inner turmoil. She feels isolated and detached from the people around her. This brokenness is evident in her interactions with her roommates and most prominently with the company director, Paul Grayson (Ben Daniels). Grayson is a perfectionist and runs the Company with an iron fist. He pushes the dancers to their limits and shows no mercy. This often creates scenarios where the dancers are put under immense stress.

As the episode progresses, Claire realizes that her inner demons are making it difficult for her to perform to her capability. She is confronted with her past and is forced to undergo a reality check. Meanwhile, Kiira (Irina Dvorovenko), the Company's prima ballerina, is going through some personal issues of her own. She is trying to reconnect with her estranged mother and is putting on a brave face to keep herself together. However, the harsh realities of her past and present collide, leading her to make a desperate decision that could put not only her future but also the Company's future at risk.

As the auditions commence, some of the dancers falter under the pressure, while others excel. For the first time in the series, we see the dancers outside of the rehearsal space and performing pieces on a stage at an audition. The episode also highlights how cutthroat the dance industry can be. The audience is shown just how ruthless and unforgiving it can be, especially when it comes to landing the coveted lead roles.

As the episode closes, some of the dancers are one step closer to achieving their dream, while others are left to pick up the pieces and to figure out their next move. Meanwhile, Claire finally confronts Grayson, something she had been avoiding. It is then that she realizes that she has strength and willpower that she did not know she had. There is a sense of hope in her eyes, and the audience gets a glimpse of the beauty that lies within her.

Flesh and Bone season 1 Episode 5, "M.I.A," is a reflection of how the world of ballet is not as glamorous as it appears to be. The episode shows how much grit, determination, and hard work goes into making it to the top in the industry. It is thrilling and heartwarming all at once, with some of the most compelling performances in this episode that captures a dancer's resolute spirit. It is a must-watch for anyone who wants a behind-the-scenes peek into the ballet world.
