Cold Squad was a procedural crime drama that dealt with a unit within the Vancouver police department specializing in unsolved cases. A female investigator named Sgt. Ali McCormick led the team. Together with her diverse team of men and women, they investigated the old murders using forensics, questioning, and research to solve the case. The show also revolved around the characters' relationships with one another and as well as their personal lives outside of the job. Each episode had a self-contained plot that was usually resolved within a single episode. However, there are several two-part episodes taking place in almost every season. The personal lives of the characters, and arches for their development, continued throughout the season. In each of the first two seasons, the individual episodes were named for the victim of the cold case that the squad was attempting to solve. For the remaining seasons, the names of the episodes became more general, encompassing the entirety of the content for the episode. The cast of the show continuously changed with the lead female character of Ali McCormick, played by Julie Stewart, being the only constant to remain for the entire 7 seasons. Some of the characters remained for a few years before eventually being replaced. Between seasons 2 and 3 all of the characters, aside from Sgt. McCormick, were replaced. Several other changes also took place between seasons, including the credits, music and setting. Even McCormick's hair color changed, going from red to blonde. The series ended after 7 years. The show aired from 1998-2005 in Canada and eventually went into US syndication in 2006. Each of the seasons was made up of 13 episodes, approximately 42 minutes in length, fitting into an hour time slot. There was a total of 98 episodes in all. The first season was eventually released on DVD.
