When Leroy and Max are demoted to the missing persons bureau from their usual supernatural cases, they’re both disappointed. However, things look up when they're assigned to work on a missing person’s case together. The person they’re looking for is a man named Barry, who was last seen at his private equity firm. Leroy and Max go to the firm and speak with Barry’s coworkers, who are all very tight-lipped and suspicious. Leroy discovers that Barry was trying to blow the whistle on a Ponzi scheme, which leads the Ghosted duo to speculate that he may have been kidnapped in retaliation.
They get a lead from the receptionist and go to a warehouse to investigate. They find a lab with a huge vat of green liquid that is emitting a strange energy. Before they can figure out what it is, they’re caught by the security guards and taken to see their boss, Harkin. Harkin is in charge of the missing persons bureau and he’s very impressed by Leroy and Max’s work, which makes them suspicious of his motives. He assigns them to a new case involving a missing college student but pretends that it’s just a routine assignment.
Leroy and Max meet with the missing girl’s roommate, who seems evasive and untrustworthy. After snooping around the dorm room, they discover that the roommate has been experimenting with some sort of strange device. They confront her and she reveals that she’s been working on a teleportation machine. She explains that she and her friend were trying to build it for their science project and that the machine malfunctioned, causing her friend to disappear.
Leroy, Max, and the roommate decide to try and use the machine to find the missing student. They find her in a strange, alternate dimension, where she’s being held captive by a doppelganger. They also discover that the green liquid from the warehouse is what powers the machine, and that it’s capable of creating portals to other dimensions. They make their way back to our dimension, but not before the doppelganger follows them through the portal.
The doppelganger is a creature from another dimension that is capable of shape-shifting to look like anyone it chooses. The creature is also trying to collect enough of the green liquid to create a portal back to its own dimension. Leroy and Max work with the roommates’ device to create a new portal, which they use to lure the doppelganger into a trap. They successfully capture the creature and Harkin is forced to congratulate them on their success.
Leroy and Max realize that even though they’re working on missing persons cases now, they’re still fighting otherworldly entities and saving the day. They’re happy to continue working together and to stay on the bureau, especially now that they know its true purpose. The episode ends with them boarding a helicopter bound for their next assignment, ready to take on whatever comes their way.
