Four college freshmen are excited to start their college life at Hayes University in the fall of 1986. Joel Harrington, Jason Wilson, Eli Schwartz, and Brian Sommers attend a fraternity party during rush week, hoping to join Omega Sigma fraternity. The party appears to be an intense test of their manliness, involving beer-drinking, hazing, and flirting with the female fraternity members.
Joel, the nerdy one, has a crush on a girl named Christie, who is part of the Omega Sigma sisterhood. Meanwhile, Jason, the jock, tries to impress his former high school teammate, Denise, who is now a member of the sorority. Eli, the pre-med student, struggles to balance his academic ambition with the fraternity's partying culture. Brian, the slacker, tries to fit in with the group while coping with the guilt of cheating on his SATs.
As the night goes on, the freshmen participate in a series of crazy activities, such as chugging beer while being paddled, wearing ridiculous costumes, and even getting dunked in a pool. They also encounter various frat brothers, including Mike, the president of Omega Sigma, who keeps a watchful eye on the pledges. Mike's roommate, Jason's former teammate, is a prankster who constantly makes fun of Jason's faith and attempts to sabotage his chances of being accepted into the fraternity.
Despite the chaotic and at times humiliating nature of the party, the freshmen remain resilient and determined to impress the frat brothers. However, they soon realize that the fraternity lifestyle may come with a heavy cost, as they witness Mike and his cronies engage in dangerous and reckless behavior that puts both their lives and the lives of the pledges in danger.
As the night comes to a close, the freshmen are left wondering if joining a fraternity is really worth it, especially when they see Brian alone and depressed, still carrying the weight of his secret. Joel manages to find some comfort in Christie, who gives him a glimmer of hope that maybe not all of the sorority girls are shallow and mean-spirited.
Overall, the first episode of "Glory Daze" sets up the premise of the show as a nostalgic look back at the '80s college experience, full of excitement, camaraderie, and a sense of adventure, but also highlighting the darker side of fraternity life. The characters are relatable and endearing, and the episode effectively introduces their individual storylines and struggles, paving the way for future episodes full of drama, humor, and heart.
