In Gunslingers season 1 episode 2, titled "Billy the Kid - The Phantom of Lincoln County," viewers are taken on a journey through the life of one of the most notorious outlaws of the Wild West, Billy the Kid.
The episode delves into the troubled childhood of Billy, who was born in New York City as Henry McCarty and later changed his name to William H. Bonney. After his father's death, Billy and his mother moved to Indianapolis, where he began getting into trouble with the law at a young age.
At just 16 years old, Billy found himself on the run after killing a man in a bar fight. He made his way to New Mexico, where he quickly became embroiled in the infamous Lincoln County War, a feud between rival factions that lasted for several years.
As the conflict escalated, Billy joined the side of the Regulators, a group of men led by John Tunstall who were fighting against the corrupt businessmen and lawmen in the region. The Regulators were eventually betrayed, however, and many of their members were killed. Billy and a few others escaped, and he quickly became a wanted man.
Over the next few years, Billy would be involved in numerous shootouts and robberies, including the infamous Lincoln County Courthouse raid. As his reputation grew, he became a symbol of resistance against the oppressive forces in the West and a hero to many.
But the law eventually caught up with Billy, and he was captured by Sheriff Pat Garrett in 1881. He was sentenced to death for the murder of Sheriff William Brady, and was executed just a few months later.
Through interviews with experts and historians, as well as reenactments of key events in Billy's life, "Billy the Kid - The Phantom of Lincoln County" paints a vivid portrait of one of the most fascinating figures in Wild West history.
