Kaiseki is the first episode of the second season of the psychological thriller television series Hannibal. The episode begins where the first season's finale left off, with Hannibal Lecter on the run and Will Graham framed for murder. Will is currently behind bars and facing trial for all the murders committed by Lecter. The psychological tension between the two characters continues to hit new heights as Hannibal resumes his position as a renowned psychotherapist in Florence.

The premiere starts with a mesmerizing sequence where a crime scene is inspected by Jack Crawford and Alana Bloom. The corpse is arranged to mimic a dish from a Japanese Kaiseki menu. The Kaiseki is a multi-course traditional Japanese dinner that is an art itself, and the meal is consumed with reverence as much as with appetite. Crawford requests Dr. Lecter who is residing in Florence to help with the case, as his unique perspective has been proved useful for investigation in the past. It is an opportunity for Lecter, as being on the run has its challenges, and this allows him to return to the US.

Will is held in prison and he has stopped being in contact with anyone ever since he's been incarcerated. Jack visits him, trying to offer comfort, but Will cannot help but feel that the institution he's currently held up in may be playing a sinister game with him, one that he might not win. Meanwhile, Dr. Chilton wants Will dead to protect his image and is manipulating the situation to his advantage.

As Hannibal slowly settles back into his life in America, he has to be cautious and avoid arousing suspicion in the FBI. He is well aware that his every move will be scrutinized by Jack and the other agents. He also faces challenges with Dr. Abel Gideon, who previously escaped from Dr. Chilton's institution and is now pursuing his freedom. He shrewdly has Hannibal's number and knows when to push his buttons. Their discussions provide a fascinating insight into the delicate balancing act Hannibal must maintain to keep his true identity concealed.

Meanwhile, we see flashbacks of what Hannibal has been up to since he left America. He spent the majority of his time in Europe, where he had a noteworthy client. Lady Murasaki has been receiving treatment from him for depression and is also helping him navigate living among the social elites of Florence. We see the repercussions of their treatment sessions framed in Hannibal's experiences with the FBI investigation on the Kaiseki case.

As a member of the FBI, Hannibal's insights prove valuable in deciphering the clues of the crime's staging, and it becomes increasingly apparent that he is the person who can solve the case. As Hannibal gets closer and closer to uncovering the identity of the killer, we witness that this is also a powerful test of his abilities to conceal the darker aspects of his character from his colleagues. The episode climaxes with a surprising and suspenseful reveal of the killer's identity and leaves us with a crucial cliffhanger.

Overall, the premiere episode marks a gripping return to the world of Hannibal, with stunning visuals, a virtuoso performance from the lead actors, and intriguing plot twists. It sets up expectations for the second season beautifully and ensures that the show remains a must-watch crime thriller.
