Ep 1. Antipasto

Hannibal season 3 episode 1, Antipasto, opens with Hannibal Lecter (Mads Mikkelsen) living in Florence, Italy under the identity of Dr. Fell. He has a new companion, Bedelia Du Maurier (Gillian Anderson), who is posing as his wife. The episode follows Hannibal's preparation for a dinner party he is hosting for a few of his acquaintances.

Throughout the episode, Hannibal showcases his love for Italian culture, as he visits art galleries, museums, and even a butcher shop, where he purchases some meat to use for the dinner party. In between these excursions, the audience is given glimpses into Hannibal's past and how he came to be in Florence.

Bedelia seems to be struggling with her new life, often feeling smothered and threatened by Hannibal. This is shown through flashbacks to a conversation they had before leaving the United States, where Hannibal warns Bedelia about the dangers of having a relationship with him.

As the dinner party approaches, Hannibal becomes increasingly excited about his plans, which include serving his guests a dish made with human meat. However, when one of his guests, Inspector Pazzi (Fortunato Cerlino), begins to suspect Hannibal's true identity, it becomes clear that Hannibal's safety in Florence may be halted.

Antipasto sets the tone for season three, which focuses heavily on Hannibal and his relationships with those around him. The episode also showcases the beautiful Italian scenery and culture, contrasting the darkness of Hannibal's character.
