In the first episode of season 2 of the documentary series Hate Thy Neighbour, comedian Jamali Maddix travels to the Deep South of the United States to delve into the complex relationship between love and hate.

Maddix begins his journey in Louisiana, where he meets a white supremacist couple who both grew up in abusive households and found refuge in hate groups. They explain how their hate for other races and religions has helped them find a sense of community and belonging. Maddix challenges their views, but also tries to understand what led them down this path.

Next, Maddix travels to Mississippi to meet a group of black gun enthusiasts who believe in the right to bear arms for self-defense. They share their experiences of growing up in a region with a history of racism and violence, and how owning guns helps them feel safe. Maddix explores the intersection between self-defense and hate and questions whether this is a healthy way to cope with fear and anger.

Maddix then heads to Georgia to attend a conference organized by a pastor who preaches love, but also preaches against homosexuality. Maddix interviews attendees who express mixed feelings about their pastor's teachings, with some feeling conflicted about their own beliefs and others fully agreeing with him. He also speaks with gay protesters outside the conference, who share their experiences of discrimination and hatred in the region.

Finally, Maddix concludes his journey in South Carolina, where he meets a woman who was once a member of the KKK, but has since left the group and now advocates for love and understanding. She explains how her experiences with hate have led her to a newfound love for diversity and acceptance. Maddix reflects on the power of love in overcoming hate and the importance of listening to different perspectives.

Love and Hate in the Deep South is a thought-provoking episode that explores the complexity of hate in a region with a troubled history of racism and discrimination. Maddix's humorous yet respectful approach to his subjects allows for a nuanced examination of their beliefs, while also challenging viewers to consider the role of love in healing hate.
