Cullen Bohannon, portrayed by Anson Mount, has been through a lot in the past eight episodes of the first season of Hell on Wheels. He's chased after the Union soldiers who killed his wife, come to realize that the men who actually killed her were a group of Native Americans, and has gotten himself into a fair amount of trouble trying to seek revenge. In episode nine, titled "Timshel," Cullen finds himself working with the Union Army and a group of former slaves in order to put a stop to a common enemy - the band of Native American warriors who killed his wife.
At the start of the episode, Cullen returns to Hell on Wheels after successfully capturing a Native American boy who will likely lead him to the men who killed his wife. However, he's quickly given another task by the Union troops - to lead a group of former slaves in securing a shipment of weapons being sent to the town. Of course, Cullen isn't too thrilled about taking orders from anyone, but he knows that he needs to be in the good graces of the Union if he's going to be able to track down his wife's killers.
Meanwhile, a group of white settlers who are attempting to make their way to California pass through Hell on Wheels. As is often the case in the American West in the late 1800s, these settlers don't have much respect for Native Americans and their customs. When they hear about the issues that Cullen and the Union troops are having with the tribe that killed Cullen's wife, they decide to take matters into their own hands and go after the Native Americans themselves.
As the episode progresses, it becomes clear that the white settlers are not only unprepared for what they're about to face, but that their ignorance could lead to even more trouble for the folks living in Hell on Wheels. Cullen and the former slaves, on the other hand, are able to work together to come up with a plan that just might bring peace to the land.
Throughout the episode, we see the relationships between the characters in Hell on Wheels continue to evolve. Cullen is seen spending time with Elam, a former slave who has become one of his closest allies. Lily Bell (Dominique McElligott), the widow of the man who was tasked with building the railroad through Hell on Wheels, is also featured prominently in the episode. Her business savvy and intelligence are on full display, and she proves to be a trusted ally for Cullen and the Union troops.
Overall, "Timshel" is a tense and action-packed episode of Hell on Wheels. It's clear that tensions are running high between the Native Americans and the settlers in the area, and the threat of violence is always looming. However, the episode also shows that progress can be made when people with different backgrounds and experiences come together to work towards a common goal. As the season heads towards its conclusion, it will be interesting to see how the relationships between the characters continue to develop, and what other challenges they'll have to face along the way.
