Ep 16. Cupcake

Ted is preparing to go on a date with a woman he met at the gym, and Barney and Marshall decide to help him out by bringing him some cupcakes from a bakery they swear by. However, they get lost on the way and end up at the wrong bakery, where they purchase cupcakes that turn out to be awful. Meanwhile, Lily and Robin decide to spend the evening collecting money for a charity for homeless animals.

Ted meets his date at an ice-skating rink, but when he tries to impress her with his skating skills, he falls and she injures her ankle in the process. Ted feels terrible and insists on taking her to the hospital. Once they arrive, Ted tries to make small talk with the other injured patients in the waiting room, but he can't seem to find the right thing to say. Finally, he spots a man with a bakery box and asks him about it. Turns out, it's the very same bakery that Barney and Marshall went to earlier, and the man confirms that the cupcakes are indeed terrible.

Meanwhile, Lily and Robin are having a rough time collecting money for the animal charity. They encounter a man who claims to be allergic to animals, a group of teenagers who mock them, and eventually end up getting stranded without money or a phone. Just when they think their night can't get any worse, they stumble upon a lost dog who leads them to a nearby shelter. The shelter is holding a "puppy party," and the girls end up having a blast cuddling and playing with the puppies.

Back at the hospital, Ted decides to do something nice for his date, so he goes on a mission to find the perfect cupcake. He finally finds the right bakery, but they're sold out of cupcakes. Determined to make it right, Ted buys a muffin and scrapes the top off with his fingers to make it look like a cupcake.
