Ep 12. First Time In New York

Ted takes his sister, Heather, to New York City for the first time. Excited to show her all the sights and sounds of the city that never sleeps, Ted takes her to all his favorite spots. Meanwhile, Marshall and Lily have their own adventure as they try to find a way to celebrate the anniversary of their first date.

As Ted and Heather walk around the city, visiting landmarks like the Statue of Liberty and Central Park, Heather becomes overwhelmed with all the activity and noise. As the night wears on, she becomes increasingly homesick and asks Ted to take her back to their hometown. Ted is disappointed but understanding, and agrees to take her home.

Meanwhile, Marshall and Lily's plans to celebrate their anniversary are derailed when they realize they can't afford to do anything extravagant. They try to come up with a low-budget plan, but are disappointed with everything they come up with. Finally, they decide to stay at home and eat the same meal they ate on their first date - grilled cheese sandwiches and tomato soup - while listening to their favorite songs from college.

As they enjoy their simple celebration, Marshall and Lily realize that it's not about the money they spend or the things they do, but about the memories they share and the love they have for each other. They decide that they don't need fancy anniversary celebrations to be happy, and that they will continue to celebrate their love in their own small and meaningful ways.

Meanwhile, back in New York, Ted takes Heather home and says goodbye, feeling disappointed that he couldn't show her more of the city. But when he gets home, he realizes that he doesn't need to show others the city to love it himself. He reflects on all the memories he's made in New York - both good and bad - and realizes that the city is a part of him, and will always be a part of his story.

The episode ends with Ted looking out over the city skyline, feeling grateful for all the experiences he's had and looking forward to all the adventures still to come.
