Ep 6. I'm Not That Guy

Marshall is at home waiting for Lily to come back from a trip to Seattle. While he waits, he decides to watch some home videos, and stumbles upon one from college where he promised to never keep secrets from Lily. He then proceeds to start confessing all of the secret things he’s done.

Meanwhile, Ted and Barney get a new friend that they really enjoy hanging out with named Mitch. However, Mitch isn’t just a normal guy - he’s a “re-gifter” who gives away presents he doesn’t like or want. Ted and Barney are both trying to keep their friendship with Mitch separate, so they don’t get caught not liking each other’s gifts. But, Mitch ends up re-gifting the same present to both of them, and they both confront him about it.

Back at the apartment, Robin and Marshall talk about secrets, and Robin gives Marshall some clues that Lily may have more secrets than he realizes. When Lily finally gets home, Marshall decides he doesn’t want any secrets between them, and lays out all of the secrets he’s been hiding. Lily then reveals a secret of her own, and the two of them find out that they’re even more perfect for each other than they thought.

Throughout the episode, we see flashbacks from college of Marshall and Ted, and how they handled their first big secrets. In the end, Ted realizes that the secret he kept wasn’t worth it, and he tells Barney the truth about a pair of leather pants he once borrowed and destroyed. Barney is upset at first, but ultimately forgives Ted.

The episode ends with Marshall and Lily cuddling in bed, and Marshall confessing one more secret - he ate the last bowl of Captain Crunch. Lily is surprised, but tells him it’s okay as long as they keep sharing secrets with each other.
