Ted is on a quest to find the best burger in New York City. Along the way, he drags his friends Lily, Marshall, Barney, and Robin to try a variety of burgers. As they go to different burger joints, they discover some hidden gems and also run into a few obstacles.
Meanwhile, Marshall is dealing with a crisis at work, and is struggling to come up with a new environmental slogan for Goliath National Bank. He turns to Lily for inspiration, but ends up getting sidetracked by their burger quest.
Barney, always the one to make things interesting, introduces them to a food critic who adds some pressure to their burger mission. They all become obsessed with impressing him, and try to outdo each other with their burger recommendations.
As the night goes on, Ted becomes increasingly frustrated with their lack of success in finding the best burger. Just when they're about to call it a night, they stumble upon a hidden burger joint called "The Frying Dutchman." They try the burger and it's unlike anything they've ever tasted before.
Ted declares it the best burger in New York and rushes to tell everyone. But when they go back the next day, they realize that the burger joint has already closed down. They're devastated, but at the same time, they realize that the search for the best burger brought them closer together and created a memorable experience.
In the end, Marshall finds inspiration for his environmental slogan from their burger quest, and they all end up at a diner, sharing a burger and reminiscing about their adventures.
