Ted and Barney are at MacLaren's Pub, discussing a new bar that Ted designed, which he believes will be called "Penny Meadow". However, Barney tells Ted that he will always be "that guy" that's trying to hold onto his youth, while Barney is fully embracing it.
Ted then begins to explain why he wants Penny Meadow to exist, which leads to an extended fantasy sequence that involves Barney and Ted traveling through time to the year 2030. The two friends have an animated conversation about their present lives, and it becomes clear that Ted is feeling lonely and unhappy.
As they walk through the streets of New York City, they see glimpses of their future selves, including future Barney, who is surrounded by beautiful women and having a great time at the Penny Meadow bar. Ted then has an imaginary conversation with a girl named Tracy, who he claims he will meet at the Penny Meadow bar in the future.
Eventually, Ted returns to the present day, where he is still sitting alone at the bar. He tells Barney that he found Penny Meadow by himself in the future, and he encourages Barney to come with him to the opening of the bar the following week.
The episode concludes with Ted standing alone on the street corner, contemplating whether to go back and see the opening of Penny Meadow by himself, or to stay and try to find someone to go with him. The episode leaves open the question of whether he ultimately decides to attend the opening alone or whether he finds someone to go with him.
