Uncharacteristically morose, Bertie is brooding on the subject of marriage and parenthood. His life is empty. To fill the void he decides to marry Bobbie Wickham of whom Jeeves has always taken a dim view. The presence of Bobbie's young niece, Clementina foils Bertie's chances to propose and the idea of marriage can do no more than drift on inconclusively. Meanwhile, the romantic escapades of his two chums give Bertie and Jeeves quite enough to think about. Tuppy Glossop has fallen out with his his fiancee Angela Travers and has fallen in love with Daisy Dalgleish. Bertie is determined that the misunderstanding between Tuppy and Angela should be resolved and Tuppy made to see that Daisy is not the girl for him. Between them, Bertie and Jeeves come up with the solution. In the meantime, Jeeves lends his ear to another of Bertie's pals. Bingo Little has fallen in love with a tea-shop waitress, by the name of Mabel, though fears his Uncle, Lord Bittlesham may not approve of their union. Jeeves suggests an ingenious way of preparing 'Uncle Mortimer' for news of his nephew's intentions. The outcome is as surprising as it is romantic.
