Ep 19. Hank's Back Story

Hank's Back Story is the nineteenth episode of the fifth season of King Of The Hill. In this episode, Hank injures his back while trying to lift a giant propane tank that was filled with water, which was left in his basement by his deceased father. Unable to move, he is confined to a horizontal position for a few days, which gives him the perfect opportunity to tell his son, Bobby, about his own childhood and how he grew up.

During the course of the episode, we see flashbacks of Hank's childhood, including his first propane grill, which he received as a birthday present when he was just eight years old, and how it inspired his love for propane. We also learn about his first job at the family business, Strickland Propane, where he worked under Buck Strickland, who would become his mentor. We witness Hank's progression within the company until he finally receives a promotion to assistant manager of the Arlen branch.

At the same time, we see how Peggy, Bobby's mother, is coping with Hank's back injury. Peggy, who feels overwhelmed by the situation, receives guidance from her therapist, who advises her to take control and become the "alpha" in the house. Peggy takes this advice too seriously and goes on a power trip, leading to humorous situations throughout the episode.

Meanwhile, Dale, Bill, and Boomhauer, Hank's friends, bring in a massage therapist to help Hank heal his back. However, the therapist only makes things worse, and Hank becomes increasingly frustrated as he struggles to regain his mobility.

The episode takes an emotional turn when Hank's father's ghost appears to him in a dream. We see how Hank's relationship with his father was complicated, and how he struggled to live up to his expectations. In the dream, Hank's father tells him he is proud of him, which brings relief to Hank and helps him let go of his long-held feelings of guilt and inadequacy.
