Life Below Zero is an informative reality TV series that follows the lives of several Alaskans as they brave off the grid and live off the land in some of the most remote regions of the state. The second episode of the series' second season is titled "Hungry Country," and it's an episode that fully embodies the challenges and rewards of living in such a harsh and unforgiving environment.
The episode begins with Glenn bringing his snowmobile to Kavik River Camp, where he's the caretaker. Though he's excited to be back after a week out of town, he quickly realizes that the camp has run into a bit of trouble during his absence. One of the motors has broken down, which means that they don't have enough power to run the camp efficiently. Glenn knows he needs to fix the motor as soon as possible, but he's worried about the snowmobiling conditions.
Meanwhile, fellow Alaskans Sue and Erik are also experiencing problems. Their dog team is weak and thin, which means that they don't have enough power to cover the distance they need to in order to hunt for food. Both Sue and Erik know that they need to be extra careful during this time of year since they can't rely on their dogs for support. They also have to deal with the added challenge of extremely low temperatures.
On the other side of the state, resident Bob is facing his own set of challenges. Bob's main source of income comes from hunting, but he hasn't been able to catch any animals in weeks. He's low on food supplies and has no other choice but to take on the wilderness to try and catch something - anything - for dinner. His mood is noticeably low, and he's concerned that he won't be able to sustain himself and his family for much longer.
In the end, Glenn manages to fix the motor at the Kavik River Camp, which means that the camp's electricity is back to normal. Though he's tired after a long day of work, he's happy that everything is back to the way it should be. Sue and Erik have some success when they spot a moose in the distance, but they quickly realize that the moose is too far away for them to catch. They're disappointed but continue to press on. Bob manages to catch a rabbit, which he sees as a small but significant victory. Though it's not a large animal, Bob is happy that he was able to catch something for the first time in weeks.
In closing, "Hungry Country" is a raw and intense look into life in Alaska. The show does an excellent job of illustrating the difficulties of living in such a challenging environment. It's a must-watch for anyone who's interested in the outdoors, survivalism, or just wants to see what life is like in one of the most remote parts of the country.
