In the season 9 premiere of Life Below Zero, titled "Unfamiliar Territory," viewers are taken on a journey to some of the most remote areas of Alaska where the harsh winter months make it difficult for even the most experienced wilderness dwellers to survive.

The episode features several different families and individuals living off the grid, including Sue Aikens, a self-proclaimed "tough gal" who owns and operates the Kavik River Camp, a remote outpost located 197 miles north of the Arctic Circle. With temperatures dropping well below freezing, Sue must take extra precautions to ensure the safety of both herself and her guests.

Meanwhile, in the Brooks Range, Erik Salitan, a professional hunting guide, must prepare for a long winter ahead. He spends his summer months leading clients on epic hunting expeditions but come winter, he must focus on keeping his family and his sled dogs healthy and fed. Erik relies heavily on his dogs to help him navigate the treacherous terrain, but the dogs themselves must also be kept healthy and well-fed to ensure their survival.

In another part of Alaska, Glenn Villeneuve is living alone in the wilderness, miles away from any other human being. Glenn enjoys the solitude of the wilderness but must hunt, trap, and forage for his own food. With the winter months approaching, he must stock up on supplies and prepare his shelter to withstand the freezing temperatures.

Finally, we are introduced to the Hailstone family who live a traditional subsistence lifestyle in Noorvik, a small Inupiaq Eskimo village. The family relies heavily on fishing and hunting for their food and must work diligently to preserve and store their catch for the long winter months ahead.

Throughout the episode, viewers get an inside look at what life is really like for these brave individuals who have chosen to make their homes in some of the most remote parts of Alaska. From hunting and trapping to gathering and preserving food supplies, each individual must use their skills and knowledge to survive the harsh winter months.

Overall, "Unfamiliar Territory" is a fascinating look at what life is like for those who choose to live off the grid in some of the most remote areas of Alaska. With stunning scenery and an eye-opening glimpse into the challenges of winter wilderness living, Life Below Zero offers a unique perspective on what it means to truly embrace the frontier spirit.
