Lou Grant season 4 episode 11 is titled "Generations." In this episode, the Tribune staff takes on the sensitive issue of age discrimination.
Lou assigns Rossi to do a story on a retired office worker who has been denied reemployment because he is over 65. Initially, the man claims his company has unjustly fired him because of his age. However, as Rossi dives deeper into the story, he uncovers that the man is suing the company for severance pay.
While investigating the case, Rossi discovers that the man's company has been laying off a significant number of their workers over 60 years old, and giving them very little compensation for it. The Tribune team is shocked to learn that this case is not an isolated situation. Age discrimination seems to be rampant in the city, with companies firing their older employees to hire younger ones, who earn lower salaries.
As the story progresses, the Tribune staff believes they have enough evidence to publish their exclusive coverage of the case. Meanwhile, another character, Animal, finds himself at odds with his dad for lying about his age to qualify for a union job. He feels that his dad's act is a betrayal of the activism that he stood for when he was younger. But soon enough, he realizes that his father did what he needed to do to provide for his family.
In a touching scene, Lou and Animal's dad discuss the true meaning of activism and how it translates into the choices that one makes. Animal's dad confirms that he did what he had to do, and that it doesn't make him any less of an activist.
In this episode, the staff of the Tribune struggles with the ultimate challenge of reporting on a cause close to their hearts while maintaining their obligations as journalists. They face the ethical question of whether to report on the case or to bury it to protect the reputation of the company involved. Rossi, particularly, is torn between his duty as a reporter and his friendship with one of the higher-ups at the company.
Throughout the episode, the characters learn that activism comes in different forms, and it can be personal and private, or public and critical. Lou Grant season 4 episode 11, "Generations," delivers a nuanced exploration of the topic of age discrimination and how it affects older workers in the city. It presents a thought-provoking challenge to its viewers to consider the ethical implications of activism and journalism and how they intersect.
