Lou Grant season 4 episode 5, titled "Goop", focuses on the aftermath of a train accident in which two tank cars carrying hazardous chemicals derailed and exploded, causing many deaths and injuries. When the Tribune staff arrive on the scene, they find themselves amidst the chaos and confusion of the rescue efforts, with emergency crews struggling to contain the poisonous fumes and to identify the victims of the crash.

As they begin to interview survivors and witnesses, Lou and his reporters quickly realize that no one seems to know exactly what was in the tank cars, and that the company responsible for shipping the chemicals is not being forthcoming with information or taking responsibility for the accident. With tensions running high and conflicting reports coming in from various sources, Lou decides to take a closer look at the lax regulations governing the transport of hazardous materials and the potential risks to public safety.

Meanwhile, Joe Rossi and Billie Newman investigate a local gym that has been using a dangerous substance called "goop" on their clients in an attempt to tighten and tone their skin. When one of their interviewees suffers a severe allergic reaction to the goop, Joe and Billie discover that the gym owner has been operating without a license and that the product has not been approved by the FDA. As they dig deeper, they find that this is just the tip of the iceberg and that there may be many other unlicensed and unregulated beauty products on the market.

As the Tribune team continues to investigate both stories, they encounter resistance and obstruction from the officials and business owners who have been implicated in the accidents. Lou and his reporters are forced to confront the dehumanizing effects of profit-driven industries and the moral ambiguities of journalism in an age of sensationalism and corporate power.

Throughout the episode, Lou and his team grapple with the ethical and practical challenges of their work as they strive to uphold their commitment to truth and justice. They confront the harsh realities of human suffering and the limitations of their own understanding, while also seeking to make a positive difference in the world and to shed light on the dark corners of power and corruption. Whether reporting on a deadly train wreck or exposing the dangers of unregulated beauty products, the Tribune staff remain united in their pursuit of honest and impactful journalism.
