In Love It or List It season 5 episode 17, the show takes us to the McWilliams residence, owned by the McWilliams family. The family comprises of a couple, David and Rebecca, and their two children, Kyle and Kaitlyn.
David and Rebecca bought their home in hopes of it being their forever home, but as the years went by, their family outgrew the 2,000-square-foot house. The McWilliams family has lived in the house for 16 years, but now they are struggling with space issues, layout, and an outdated style.
David loves their home's location, as it is situated in a lovely neighborhood close to their children's school. The couple also loves the sentimental value of their home, as this is the place where they have raised their children. David has hesitance to let go of the place due to the sentimental attachment, while Rebecca is all geared up for a change.
Hilary Farr, the interior designer, and David Visentin, the real estate agent, take on the challenge of transforming the McWilliams property. Hilary's job is to re-plan the existing layout of the house and add some extra footage to the property, whereas David is responsible for finding a new home that suits the family's needs and desire.
Hilary's plan of action is to design a space that fits the family's lifestyle by redesigning the existing floor-plan and adding new footage to the property. The McWilliams hope that Hilary can add an additional room to the property, including a new space for their NFL game day viewing parties. Hilary's duty is to make all the structural changes necessary to make the house look more prominent and spacious.
David, on the other hand, begins his search for a new home that would be perfect for the McWilliams family. The family has a list of must-have home features, which David must meet in his search. David must also find a home that is in the perfect location, preferably in the same neighborhood as the McWilliams's current home.
However, David quickly realizes that the McWilliams location is highly desirable, and finding a home that meets all their needs and preferences in that area is more challenging than he thought.
As the show progresses, Hilary faces various challenges in remodeling the existing house. It is discovered that adding an additional room won't be possible, and Hilary's designs have to change accordingly. Hilary's design choices and the entire renovation process are fraught with difficulties, which exacerbate her stress levels and confront her with unexpected complications.
On the other hand, David is having a hard time finding a house that meets all the McWilliams' needs. Some homes are too small, while others are too far away from their desired location. The McWilliams children also have their unique features they want in their new home, things like extra living spaces, and bright playrooms.
In the end, the McWilliams must decide whether to love their revamped home or list it and move to a new house. The episode finale reveals whether David or Hilary gets to win the day with the McWilliams family.
